Summary
Through this Notice, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces the opportunity for investigators and United States institutions/organizations with active NIH Research Grants to request administrative supplements for the purpose of promoting job creation, economic development, and accelerating the pace and achievement of scientific research. These supplements will also encourage students to seriously pursue research careers in the health related sciences, as well as provide elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, community college faculty, and faculty from non-research intensive institutions with short term research experiences in NIH-funded laboratories. Support for these supplements will come from funds provided to the NIH through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ("Recovery Act" or "ARRA"), Public Law 111-5.
This opportunity is one of several being offered by NIH and NINR to help fulfill the goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to help stimulate the economy through support of biomedical and behavioral research. For more information on NINR ARRA-related activities, please visit:

NINR Areas of Scientific Priority for Administrative Supplements Providing Summer Research Experiences
NINR will consider all applications in response to this announcement from current holders of awards supported by NINR. Applications for supplements must comply with all criteria detailed in
NOT-OD-09-060
and must describe summer research experiences highly relevant to the NINR mission and strategic plan. Broad topic areas include:
--Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
--Symptom Management, Self-Management, and Caregiving
--End-of-Life and Palliative Care
--Integrating Technology into Clinical Practice
--Reducing and Eliminating Health Disparities
NINR Funding Priorities
In response to this Notice, NINR will accept applications from current NINR grantees that hold a Research Project Grant or Center grant with any activity code (mechanism). Supplements to awards with the following activity codes will not be accepted: individual fellowship awards (F series, i.e. F31, F32, etc.); institutional training awards (T series, i.e. T32, T90, etc.); or career development awards (K series, i.e. K01, K03, etc.).
Selection criteria are detailed in the Selection Factors section of the Notice (

). While geographic variation will be considered in awarding Recovery Act funding, a proposal's scientific merit will always be the prevailing criterion.

Timeline for Review of Administrative Supplements Providing Summer Research Experiences
For FY 2009: Administrative supplement applications will be reviewed internally by NINR with notification of award by June 1, 2009.
