The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces the opportunity for investigators and United States institutions/organizations with active NIH Research Grants to request administrative supplements for the purpose of promoting job creation, economic development, and accelerating the pace and achievement of scientific research. These supplements will also encourage students to seriously pursue research careers in the health related sciences, as well as provide elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, community college faculty, and faculty from non-research intensive institutions with short term research experiences in NIH-funded laboratories. Support for these supplements will come from funds provided to NIH through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“Recovery Act” or “ARRA”), Public Law 111-5.
This initiative is one of several being offered by the NIH and NIDCR to help fulfill the goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to help stimulate the economy through support of biomedical and behavioral research. Areas of Scientific Priority:
For the Administrative Supplements Providing Summer Research Experiences for Students and Science Educators opportunity, the supplement request should fulfill the goals of the opportunity outlined above while remaining within scope of the peer reviewed and approved project. Consistent with the NIH Notice, NIDCR intends to accept applications for supplements under this notice in all scientific areas relevant to the NIDCR mission. For an overview of areas considered of particular interest to the NIDCR mission, please refer to the draft of the NIDCR Strategic Plan 2009-2013.
Consistent with the NIH Notice, the NIDCR is particularly interested in supporting:
Summer Research Opportunities for High School and Undergraduate Students
Summer Research Opportunities for Science Educators (e.g., Elementary, Middle School and High School Teachers, Community College Faculty, and Faculty from Non-research Intensive Institutions)
In addition to the above Summer Research Opportunities, the NIDCR will consider Summer Research Opportunities for dental students who have expressed a genuine interest in research. The intent is to encourage dental students to seek further research training and consider research careers. Consistent with policies for all summer interns, salary support for dental students for summer employment must be reasonable, consistent with institutional salary policies and be no more than $10 per hour, unless justification is provided. (This amount is consistent with the pro-rated NRSA pre-doctoral stipend.)
Because the NIDCR is fully committed to optimizing a quality experience for the individuals supported under this supplement program, the number of people supported under any grant will be limited to two unless there is compelling evidence presented that the parent research project can accommodate more than two summer people and that each person will have the opportunity to have a rich research experience.
In addition to the salary dollar limits expressed in the NIH Notice, the NIDCR will generally support up to an additional $1,000 per person for the costs of laboratory supplies and other related allowable costs, such as relevant travel.
The supplement application should describe the proposed duties of the interns and how those duties relate to and further the goals of the parent grant research project. The accompanying budget requests should be itemized by category of intern: (1) high school student; (2) undergraduate; (3) science teachers and college faculty; and (4) dental students.
With regard to full-time versus part-time experience and length of the summer experience, the NIDCR strongly encourages a full-time experience of sufficient duration to be meaningful to the intern and to the parent research project.
This announcement is for administrative supplements to active NIH Research Grants, Research Program and Center Grants (Ps), and Cooperative Agreements (Us). Accordingly, the NIDCR will accept requests for the following types of grants (activity codes):
R01, R21, R03, R00, R15, R37, R56, R41, R42, R43, R44, P01, P50, RL1, UL1, U01, U19, U54, K22 (independent faculty phase only)
The following types of grants (activity codes) will not be accepted by NIDCR:
Fs, T32, R13/U13, R25
At this time, the NIDCR will accept requests for one year only: FY09.
Funding Priorities:
The NIDCR expects to allocate up to $12,000,000 to the ARRA supplement program comprising NOT-OD-09-060 and NOT-OD-09-056, with approximately 65 percent devoted to Administrative Supplements for Collaborative Science described in NOT-OD-09-056.
