harkin announces more than $600,000 in recovery act funding for university of iowa

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced over $600,000 in funding for the University of Iowa to conduct biomedical research.  The funding was secured through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the economic recovery package.  Harkin chairs the Appropriations subcommittee that funds National Institutes of Health (NIH) research and was able to secure $10.4 billion for medical research across the United States in the ARRA.

“I am pleased that the University of Iowa has received these funds,’” said Harkin.  “The researchers there do excellent biomedical research and with this grant they will be able to continue to do so.”

These grants were awarded through the NIH, which funds biomedical research and research training at more than 3,000 institutions in the 50 states and territories.

The details of the grant are below.

$317,087 for research on cardiac care in specialty and general hospitals.
$38,962 for research on immunopathology mediated by RSV-specific CD4 T cells.
$143,776 for research on regulation of mitochondrial fission/fusion by PP2A and PKA in neurons.
$102,079 for research on mitochondrial calcium cycling in neuronal function.
