HIV/AIDS Vaccine Clinical Trial Partnerships

NIAID supports a number of HIV vaccine trials around the world through several internal and external organizations.

  • HIV Vaccine Trials Network—Formed in 1999 by NIAID, the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is an international collaboration of scientists and educators that performs clinical research through a network of domestic and international clinical trials sites.
    • Conducts all phases of clinical trials: evaluating experimental vaccines for safety and the ability to stimulate immune responses; testing vaccine efficacy; developing and validating assays
    • Develops, implements, analyzes, and prioritizes vaccine design concepts and protocols through scientific committees
  • Partnership for AIDS Vaccine Evaluation (PAVE)—PAVE is a voluntary consortium of U.S. government agencies and U.S. government-funded organizations involved in HIV vaccine research. Members of PAVE include DAIDS, the Office of AIDS Research, the HVTN, the Dale and Betty Bumpers VRC, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Military HIV Research Program, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.
  • U.S. Military HIV Research Program (USMHRP)—Established in 1985 to protect troops entering endemic HIV areas, this program brings together scientists from the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. DAIDS jointly plans and executes HIV/AIDS research projects with the USMHRP through an interagency agreement.
  • Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI)—CHAVI was established by DAIDS as part of the Global HIV/AIDS Vaccine Enterprise. It aims to elucidate basic sciences questions and conduct early phase clinical trials of HIV vaccine candidates at clinical sites around the world. Dr. Barton Haynes of Duke University serves as the principle investigator of CHAVI’s scientific leadership group.
  • Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise (GHAVE)—GHAVE is a virtual consortium of organizations committed to the development of a preventive HIV/AIDS vaccine. It's goal is to implement shared scientific plans, mobilize resources, and improve worldwide collaborations.
  • International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)—IAVI was founded in 1996 to speed discovery of an HIV vaccine. It partners worldwide with private companies, academic institutions, and government agencies, such as NIH.
