View of Mauna Kea and Silversword Objectives:
Star  Conduct research on fire ecology and behavior on Mauna Kea
Star  Develop fuel models and maps to aid with developing management strategies for upland dry habitat plant communities in Hawai`i


Accomplishments:
Star  Project started in FY06
Star  Plant community maps for Mauna Kea are currently being revised
Star  Climate data for the project area are being compiled and new stations established as needed


Significance:
Star  Fire poses a major threat to the native mesic and xeric ecosystems of the Hawaiian Islands
Star  Alien species have altered the fire regime in most Hawaiian ecosystems
