NSLI-Y Scholarships and Languages
In 2009 and 2010 the NSLI-Y program is offering American youth opportunities to study seven languages in a variety of formats. Arabic, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Turkish will be taught in three program models: short-term (four to six week) summer programs, semester (fall or spring) programs, and full academic year programs. Hindi and Farsi will be offered only in short-term summer programs. Participants choose the program length that suits their needs. Participants in all programs will live and study in countries where the languages are spoken, and can expect a rigorous program designed to achieve fluency in the languages. NSLI-Y programs immerse students in the language and culture of the host country through formal education and daily interaction with host country counterparts (families and communities). NSLI-Y Administration
NSLI-Y is a Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs program providing merit-based scholarships for language study abroad. A consortium led by American Councils for International Education and including AFS-USA, iEARN-USA, and Concordia Language Villages administers all aspects of the NSLI-Y program.
