Summer Internship Program

PURPOSE

The committee's internship program is intended to provide undergraduate juniors and seniors a firsthand opportunity to observe and participate in the legislative process from a House committee perspective.

THE COMMITTEE

The House Armed Services Committee has jurisdiction over all activities of the Department of Defense, the national security programs of the Department of Energy (principally involving the production and maintenance of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile), and certain maritime programs of the Department of Transportation.  Thus, students engaged in National Security coursework will receive priority consideration for placement in the internship program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns will carry out a combination of administrative and legislative duties.  Some responsibilities will be clerical, however,  the HASC internship also offers opportunities to conduct research and attend staff meetings, congressional hearings, lectures and cultural programs.  This internship program is specifically designed to give students a fun and educational perspective of working with a congressional committee in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities include:

  • Answering the telephone and general administrative support

  • Data entry

  • Drafting correspondence

  • Assisting with special projects, including legislative research

  • Assisting with outgoing mail

  • Attending Congressional hearings, briefings, and meetings

The Armed Services Committee is looking for students who are willing to work hard, participate in various activities, assist staff members on the committee, and have fun.

INTERN EXPERIENCE

Emily, a Peace, War, and Defense major,  from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill said, "By working on terrorism panel hearings, conference preparations, and general research within the office, I now have a greater comprehension of the committee, the House, and the U.S. armed services, in general.  I appreciate the time dedicated by a number of staff members towards enriching my experience."

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The Armed Services Committee permits students to receive academic credits  for their participation in the program.  The committee also provides a small stipend for the June to August (summer semester) internship period.  Internship hours are typically 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and some overtime should be expected.
