Washington, DC -- Today, Rep. Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement in observance of Earth Day while highlighting the Gowanus Canal, a vital environmental issue of concern in the 11th Congressional District:
“April 22nd marks the 39th anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day was designated to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. The struggle continues today, as many of the most pressing challenges ahead will deal with preserving our natural resources, protecting our natural and material environment, as well as increasing public service in the public and non-profit sector for green purposes.
“As we recognize Earth Day, we understand that what we do today has an impact on future generations of Americans and that protecting the environment is vital to the survival, health and well being of all Americans, particularly our children. This is why I supported the Give Act, which will expand the emphasis on building a green, energy-efficient economy, and will use my position as the CBC Whip and the Senior Democratic Whip of the Democratic Caucus to make the environment a priority in Washington.
“Right here in the 11th Congressional District, the Gowanus Canal is one of the most polluted waterways in New York State andisseverely impacted by contaminated sediments as a result of its long history hosting heavy industry. I am deeply committed to cleaning up this contaminated canal, working in collaboration with my colleague Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez, and other state and local elected officials. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has recently proposed listing the Gowanus Canal as a designated superfund site. I will work to ensure that all stakeholders have a seat at the table as we proceed forward to find a viable win-win solution for all affected parties.”
With the proposal of adding this site to the National priorities List, a 60-day comment period will begin during which EPA solicits public input regarding this action. Congresswoman Clarke is encouraging constituents and stakeholders to submit comments to the EPA on the Gowanus Canal proposal, which would place the site on the Federal National priorities List for Superfund designation.
