W. G. Yates held a Topping Out Ceremony 27 February 2009.
This is a significant milestone for the contractor as the ceremony celebrates the completion of the main structure of the building.
Main Building:
Concrete work continues. Pavilions A and Pavilion B, completed through roof and finishing penthouses; Pavilion C completed through 8th floor and completing roof and penthouses; Pavilion D up through third floor and completing roof. Substantial completion of the concrete work is scheduled for February 27, 2009.
Other trades are installing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection components in the building. Testing of these components has begun and will continue as sections of the building are completed. Framing, interior and exterior, is being installed throughout the building. Precast panels being installed.
Chapel:
Contract and Notice to Proceed was issued to McClain Contracting Company Incorporated to provide hazardous materials abatement and selective demolition services in connection with the Armed Forces Retirement Home Gulfport Chapel. Completion of work is scheduled May 15, 2009. CRA/LAS continue to provide design services for the Chapel. Design services will be complete April 1, 2009.
Pedestrian Overpass:
Negotiations continue for design services in connection with the overpass. Coordination and discussions continue with local, state and federal jurisdictions in preparation of the design/construction.

GULFPORT UPDATE - February 15, 2008
On Monday, March 3, 2008 at 10 a.m., the General Services Administration (GSA) is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for the new AFRH facility, replacing the former structure that was built in 1976 and severely damaged in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. GSA was designated by Congress in PL-109-234 as the lead construction agency on behalf of AFRH and the Department of Defense. Approximately $240 million dollars was appropriated by Congress for the demolition and rebuild of the new facility.
The Main Building consists of: approximately 660,000 gross square feet that will provide the full spectrum of continuing care retirement living: independent living, assisted living, and long-term care. The building will accommodate 584 residents complete with controlled parking, complete landscaping of entire site, including walking paths, outdoor areas, and recreation areas.
MaChis Lower Creek Indian Tribe of Samson, Alabama, completed the demolition of the former facility in December 2007. GSA issued a Notice to Proceed to Yates Construction of Biloxi, Miss., on January 3. The Design/Build Team is made up of W.G. Yates & Sons Construction Company, URS Corporation and SFCS. URS Corporation will provide design and engineering services and SFCS will serve as the lead architect. SFCS is recognized as experts in the design of senior care facilities in the U.S. The timeline for the completion of the project is July 2010.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announces the award of the Design Build Services in connection with the replacement project for the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH) in Gulfport, Mississippi, to Yates Construction of Biloxi, Mississippi in the amount of $188,883,476 dollars. Public Law 109-234 appropriated most of the funding for construction of the new facility and designated GSA as the lead construction agent on behalf of AFRH and the Department of Defense.
The Yates Design/Build Team is made up of W. G. Yates & Sons Construction Company, URS Corporation, and SFCS. Located in Biloxi Mississippi, Yates is the 23rd largest contractor in the United States and 2nd in multi-unit Residential according to Engineering News Record. URS Corporation who will provide design and engineering services is the largest architecture and engineering design firm according to Engineering News Record. SFCS will serve as the lead architect and is recognized experts in the design of senior care facilities in the United States.
Hundreds of veterans that lived at the AFRH-G facility were evacuated and relocated after the destructive winds and storm surge of Hurricane Katrina forced the closure of their home in August 2005. Now, the 11-story high rise overlooking the sandy beaches of the Mississippi Gulf Coast is undergoing remediation and ultimately demolition, which is expected to be completed January 2008. Yates will take over the site at that time and the construction of the new facility will begin.
This is a major milestone to reach in this project. The goal is to not only build a new facility for our country's veterans - a place they are proud to call 'home' - but for it to be a place that captures the spirit of the veterans and maintains their proud military heritage, now and for generations to come.
The timeframe for the Design Build Services phase is as follows:
