Berkeley-India Joint Leadership on Energy and the Environment

BIJLEE is a joint research and development program in which researchers work with the government and private sector of India to assist both countries in adopting pathways and approaches for reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases while pursuing sustainable economic development. BIJLEE brings together researchers to develop energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies, and policy mechanisms to transfer these technologies to the marketplace with the goal of combating climate change and promoting economic growth.

China Energy

China is fueling its phenomenal economic growth with huge quantities of coal. The environmental consequences reach far beyond its borders—China is second only to the United States in greenhouse gas emissions.

Expanding its supply of other energy sources, like nuclear power and imported oil, raises trade and security issues. Soaring electricity demand necessitates the construction of over 40 GW of new capacity per year, creating sustained financing challenges.

While daunting, the challenge of meeting China's energy needs presents a wealth of opportunities, particularly in meeting demand through improved energy efficiency.

The China Energy Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is committed to understanding those opportunities, and to exploring their implications for policy and business. We work collaboratively with energy researchers, suppliers, regulators, and consumers in China and elsewhere

International Energy Studies

The International Energy Studies Group is composed of scientists active in the world energy studies community in the areas of energy, forestry, and climate research. They work to inform governments and international institutions on energy-related issues to help them formulate energy and environmental policies and to facilitate the diffusion of energy-efficient and environmentally benign technology.
