The Division of Extramural Research
The Division of Extramural Research (DER) provides scientific administration and management of the National Human Genome Research Institute's grants, cooperative agreements and contracts programs. In consultation with the broad scientific community, the DER supports funding for research, training and career development in genomics at sites across the nation. The DER is also the locus for international collaborations at the National Institutes of Health for genomic research.

Researchers from the model organism ENCODE (modENCODE) consortium, an effort to identify all of the functional elements in the genomes of the fruit fly and round worm, have published details of the project's scientific strategy in the June 18 issue of Nature.
