Arkansas’s State and Local Priorities Funding Requests for Fiscal Year 2010

As a United States Senator, one of my responsibilities is to help Arkansans identify federal funding opportunities that will enable them to improve our quality of life.  Many times, our state agencies, local governments, and nonprofit organizations are successful in obtaining funding through competitive grant processes.  In addition to pursuing these opportunities, Arkansans often look to me for assistance through the Congressional Appropriations process.  This gives me another opportunity to represent Arkansas’s interests and ensure that the needs of our small rural state are not overlooked by the federal bureaucracy in Washington.

This is a responsibility that I take seriously.
The requests I receive from Arkansans support economic development initiatives, renewable energy, higher education, health care and medical research, military construction, and transportation and infrastructure improvements that have regional and national benefits.  The total funding for requests such as these account for less than 2 percent of our nation’s annual discretionary spending, but these are investments that have a tremendous impact on our communities.

I have supported efforts to bring more transparency to the Appropriations process, and I have been pleased that the Democratic Congress has added unprecedented transparency and accountability to the process since 2007.  With these improvements, the public knows more about the Congressional Appropriations process than ever before.

In accordance with efforts to bring greater transparency to the Appropriations process, I am posting the requests that I have submitted to the Senate Appropriations Committee on my web site.  Only a few of these requests may ultimately receive funding.  These requests must first be approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee, then by both the Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.  Finally, the President of the United States must sign the Appropriations legislation into law for any of the requests to receive funding.
