Congressional Art Competition


HISTORY

The Congressional Arts Caucus, an organization of members from the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate interested in supporting the arts, launched the Congressional Art Caucus in 1982 in order to provide members of Congress an opportunity to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.

ELIGIBILITY
This competition is open to Hawaii’s high school students (grades 9-12) in the 2nd Congressional District. Only 10 entries per school.

SEMI FINALS

Counties in the Second Congressional District (Hawaii, Kauai, Lanai, Molokai, Maui, and Rural Oahu) will drop off their artwork at a designated location for it to be judged. Semi-finalists will be notified via their art teacher. The artwork that has placed in the semi-finals will be sent to Oahu for a final judging.

FINALS
Semi-finalists artwork will be judged on Oahu at a designated location.  The first, second, and third place winners from the finals will be notified via their art teacher.

The first place winner will represent Hawaii’s Second Congressional District in the national exhibit in Washington D.C.  The second place winner will have their artwork displayed in Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono’s DC office and third place winner will have their artwork displayed in the Honolulu Office. 

NATIONAL CEREMONY
The first place winner and his/her art teacher will participate in a national ceremony held in Washington, D.C.  Artwork from each congressional district nationwide will be displayed in the Cannon House Office Building walkway to the U.S. Capitol for one year.  Airline transportation and accommodations to Washington, D.C. will be provided (see note).

NOTE: If you were selected to participate in the National Ceremony, all travel arrangements will be made through the Honolulu Office and you will be notified of your itinerary. Any costs incurred while making travel arrangements on your own will not be reimbursed. Teacher and student travel arrangements must be approved by their school and student’s parents.
