Lederman Science Center CLOSED Friday, August 7, 2009

The Lederman Science Center will be closed on Friday, August 7 due to a scheduled power outage. We will reopen Saturday, August 8 at 9:00 AM.

Pardon our appearance! The stairs at the Lederman Science Center are being rebuilt this week. Wednesday morning the construction crew poured concrete for the steps. They are now getting ready to fix up the walkway. Our next project: a new roof!

South Dakota students visit Fermilab

Last week ten high school seniors and college freshmen from South Dakota visited Fermilab for four days. They toured the Lab and learned about not only Fermilab physics, but also its prairie. Check out the Fermilab Today story about the visit.

Prairie Quadrat Studies for the Public

Help Fermilab monitor the restoration of our prairie. Using scientific plant monitoring techniques and with the help of a docent, citizen scientists identify and count the different plant species in a square meter of the prairie. STEM Career Expo April 29, 2009

The Education Office is hosting the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Career Expo on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 5:30-8:30 PM in Wilson Hall. The expo is for Kane and DuPage County high school students interested in meeting experts in STEM careers. There will be three panel sessions for students to learn about different career areas. QuarkNet Masterclass

Approximately 45 students attended the QuarkNet Masterclass at Fermilab on February 21. Students worked with Fermilab physicists Chris Stoughton, Fred Kuehn and Kendall Mahn to analyze 1,000 LEP events to confirm Z branching ratios. The class culminated in a “scientific conference” in Curia II.

Lederman Science Center open until Dec. 22, 2008

The Lederman Science Center and gift shop will be closed for the holidays beginning Dec. 22 through Jan. 2. Orders placed by Dec. 18 will be mailed immediately but deliveries before Christmas are not guaranteed. Orders placed after Dec. 18 will be mailed Jan. 5. The LSC will be open on Saturday, Dec. 27, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Regular hours resume Saturday, Jan. 3. Call 630-840-8258 for more information.

Summer intern wins first place at SERCh (Display With Photo)

Gabriel Caceres, a student in the Summer Internships in Science and Technology program, won first place in the physics category at the first DOE Science and Energy Research Challenge (SERCh) held November 9-10. Gabe participated in the poster competition, showcasing the research he conducted with Dan Hooper this summer. His paper, "Neutralino Dark Matter as the Source of the WMAP Haze," will be published in DOE's Journal of Undergraduate Research. Gabe is a first-year graduate student at Penn State.

Volunteer Reception - Tuesday, Nov. 25

The reception and Director's Award recognizes one volunteer a year whose contributions are outstanding, even among the many volunteer supporters of Fermilab's K12 education programs. LabFest - Science Chicago (Display With Photo)

On Saturday, September 20, Fermilab participated in LabFest, the kick-off event for Science Chicago. The event took place at the Museum of Science and Industry and was free to the public. The Fermilab team of scientists and educators packed the new van full of science equipment and headed to Chicago. Adults and children alike were amazed by what they saw. One child even declared, "Science is cool, science is fun, and science is a workout!"
