Hare Discusses Enactment of Capital Bill, Future of Rail in Galesburg
07/18/09
Congressman Phil Hare (D-Rock Island) today joined Illinois State Rep. Don Moffitt (R-Gilson) to discuss enactment of the capital bill and its impact on the future of rail in Galesburg.
On Monday, Governor Pat Quinn signed the capital bill which included $33.5 million to complete three railroad overpasses at West Main, East Main and North Seminary Streets.
In 2007, Hare secured $500,000 for the overpass at North Seminary. “The capital bill is a tremendous victory for the people of Galesburg,” Hare said. “I commend Representative Moffitt for his tireless work to improve this city’s infrastructure and its economy by constructing these overpasses.”
The construction of the railroad overpasses will improve the ability of Burlington Northern (BNSF) to expand operations since train traffic can move much more quickly and safely through Galesburg. “An expanded role for BNSF means more jobs and more economic development for Galesburg,” Hare said.
There has also been a strong interest in establishing a quiet zone through Galesburg. These overpasses are a key component of that effort since trains will not have to blow their whistles as they pass through town.
Finally, EMS, fire, and other emergency service personnel are currently facing significant delays in response times to and from the area’s hospitals due to railroad traffic. The construction of these overpasses would allow first responders to transport those in need of critical care more quickly and safely.
“These overpasses will improve Galesburg’s economy and the overall quality of life for its citizens,” Hare said. “I was proud to work with Representative Moffitt to help bring them to fruition.”
