Energy Legislation

Energy security continues as one of Senator Lugar’s top priorities for the 111th Congress. Senator Lugar also introduced several bills in the 110th and 109th Congresses related to energy.

Senator Lugar cosponsored the Consumer Fuels and Vehicle Choices Act, S.1627, on August 7, 2009. The bill promote increased use of renewable fuels by ensuring greater availability of ethanol pumps and increased production of cars equipped to run on alternative fuel sources.

Senator Lugar cosponsored the Efficient Vehicle Leadership Act, S. 1620, on August 6, 2009. The bill would establish a revenue neutral, technology neutral fuel performance rebate/fee system that would spur innovation in vehicle fuel efficiency to help reduce U.S. oil dependence.

Senator Lugar cosponsored the Clean Energy for Homes and Buildings Act, S. 1574, on August 4, 2009. The bill would support local programs that help homeowners and business owners save energy and cut their energy bills by offering low-interest loans for energy-efficient building upgrades.

Senator Lugar cosponsored the 21st Century Energy Technology Deployment Act, S. 949, on May 1, 2009. The bill would improve the loan guarantee program at the Department of Energy (DOE) and to provide additional options for deploying energy technologies. The basis of the bill is to shore up the existing program at DOE, then transition to a new financially-focused agency to perform and expand upon the duties of the program.

Senator Lugar sponsored the Western Hemisphere Energy Compact of 2009, S. 587, on March 12, 2009. The bill would establish a framework for cooperation on energy security between the United States, Brazil and other interested countries in the western hemisphere.  It gives special attention to U.S.-Brazil cooperation on biofuels production, research and infrastructure.
