10/30/2008 - Newly Identified Fungus Implicated in White-Nose Syndrome in Bats: Mysterious Bat Disease Decimates Colonies in the Northeast
A previously undescribed, cold-loving fungus has been linked to white-nose syndrome, a condition associated with the deaths of over 100,000 hibernating bats in the northeastern United States.

10/23/2008 - USGS Bat Expert Covers Two Bases at Upcoming Conference
USGS research biologist Paul Cryan presented talks in two symposia at the North American Symposium on Bat Research Oct. 23-25 in Scranton, PA., addressing the patterns and hypothesized causes of bat fatalities at wind turbines, to which migratory species are particularly susceptible, and the hypothesized causes of white nose syndrome in bats, a condition severely impacting colonies of hibernating bats during the past two years, including the federally listed Indiana bat.

10/27/2008 - 10/29/2008 - Free Short-Course on the R Statistical Package
Learn R, the widely-used, open-source (free) statistical package.  USGS and NPS are offering a free short-course, presented by conference calls with live web demonstrations, starting October 27, 2008.  It is designed for natural resource managers and is open to all who are interested without charge, although long distance calls to our phone bridge are necessary.  Some previous exposure to statistics and computing will be helpful, though there are no prerequisites.
