Moran Receives Appropriations Committee Assignments for 111th Congress

Newly Appointed to Labor HHS Subcommittee

Washington, D.C., January 7th – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, received his Appropriations Subcommittee assignments this morning, adding the influential Labor, Health and Human Services (Labor HHS) Subcommittee to his portfolio.  A senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Congressman Moran will also continue to serve on the Subcommittees on Defense and as Vice-Chairman of the Interior Subcommittee.

The Defense Subcommittee and Labor HHS Subcommittee control the 1st and 2nd largest budgets of the 12 Appropriations subcommittees. Between the two, they make up nearly ½ of the $3 trillion federal budget. This will be the first time in decades that a Member of the Appropriations Committee will serve on both the Defense and Labor HHS Subcommittees. With these assignments, Moran will have jurisdictions over the budgets of some of the largest federal agencies including the Pentagon, Health and Human Services Department, EPA, Interior Department and Labor Department.

Moran stated, “We have an historic opportunity with the election of President Obama to bring about the kinds of progressive change once only dreamed about. The challenges we face as a nation, from the economic crisis to foreign upheaval, are nothing short of extraordinary. The decisions this Congress and the President make over the next few years will perhaps carry greater impact on the direction our nation takes than at any time in modern American history.  The Appropriations Committee is uniquely positioned to play a major role in working with President Obama to redefine our country’s priorities. My colleagues and I stand ready to tackle these great challenges head-on.”
