Aura data products are mostly in the new HDF-EOS5 file format (level 2 and 3),
however there are some products which are not (level 1 OMI is in the old
HDF-EOS2.x, and level 1 MLS is in plain HDF5). You will need to choose the
correct software to read a particular data product (see the descriptions of the
data product levels below for more information).
In some cases, conversion
tools exist to convert data from one format to another. One may convert older
HDF-EOS2.x to the new HDF-EOS5 format. One may also convert files from old
HDF4.x to the new HDF5 format, and vice versa. Note that HDF-EOS files are
a collection of HDF objects. Thus HDF software will read HDF-EOS files, but
you must choose the correct version, as HDF5 is not backward compatible with
the old HDF4 format.
