  Purpose

The purpose of this study is test a new counseling intervention for adolescent substance abuse. The study is comparing two forms of treatment. The first is a counseling style called Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and the second is called Enhanced Standard Care (ESC). We hypothesize that MET will be more effective than ESC in reducing substance use in adolescents.

Detailed Description:

Participants must be 12-21 years old, have come for an evaluation at the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program at Children's Hospital Boston, have used alcohol, marijuana or other drugs in the last three months, and not need immediate hospitalization. All participants complete a study questionnaire 3 times over nine months. After completing the first questionnaire participants will be randomly placed into one of the two study groups. Those randomized to the MET group will stay for a one-hour counseling session and return for two more 1-hour counseling visits over the next month. Those randomized to the ESC group will receive two phone calls from a research assistant over the next month. Everyone in the ESC group will be offered the MET sessions after completing the final questionnaire (at 9 months). Recruitment will continue through fall of 2008, with a goal of 150 participants.

Ages Eligible for Study:   12 Years to 21 Years
Genders Eligible for Study:   Both
Accepts Healthy Volunteers:   No
Criteria

Inclusion Criteria:

12-21 years old Use of alcohol, marijuana or other drugs 6 times in last 3 months CRAFFT score of 1 or greater Have completed evaluation at Adolescent Substance Abuse Program at Children's Hospital Boston

Exclusion Criteria:

Can not read or understand English at a 6th grade reading level Needs immediate hospitalization
