Did You Know?

The national VIPS Program celebrated its seventh anniversary on May 30, 2009. There were 76 state or local law enforcement volunteer programs registered with the VIPS Program when it launched in 2002.  As of May 30, there are more than 1,910 VIPS programs and 222,000 volunteers from all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. There are also programs in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.

New Training Opportunities Available

The Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) Program would like to announce two new no-cost training opportunities for law enforcement agencies. The VIPS Program will be hosting Building Blocks of a Law Enforcement Volunteer Program in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on August 18, 2009 and Advancing an Existing Law Enforcement Volunteer Program in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on September 2, 2009. Space is limited, available on a first-come, first-served basis, and is limited to two attendees per agency. Registration closes one week prior to the training. These will be the final no-cost training opportunities from the VIPS Program for Fiscal Year 2009.

RSVP: Tapping into Valuable Assets of your Community

This issue of VIPS in Focus looks at the RSVP programs within the law enforcement agencies of the Anaheim, California, Police Department; the Baltimore County, Maryland, Police Department; and the Brookings County, South Dakota, Sheriff’s Office. This issue examines how these agencies have made RSVP volunteers an integral part of their law enforcement efforts.
