TRANSPORTATION

 

Highway Improvement Program

Funding: $27.5 billion; New Jersey will receive $651.7 million

Administrator: New Jersey Department of Transportation

Description: For transportation projects including resurfacing and pavement preservation projects, traffic signal system upgrades, bridge projects, transit projects and intelligent transportation systems. Funds are distributed by formula, with a portion of the funds within each State being sub allocated by population areas.

Transit Capital Assistance

Funding: $6.9 billion; New Jersey will receive $524.2 million

Administrator: New Jersey Transit

Description: These funds will be used to purchase buses and equipment needed to provide additional public transportation service and to make improvements to intermodal and transit facilities.

Fixed Guideway Modernization

Funding: $750 million; New Jersey will receive $76.8 million

Administrator: New Jersey Transit

Description: These funds will be used for capital projects to modernize or improve existing fixed guideway systems, including purchase and rehabilitation of rolling stock, track, line equipment, structures, signals and communications, power equipment and substations, passenger stations and terminals, security equipment and systems, maintenance facilities and equipment, operational support equipment including computer hardware and software, system extensions, and preventive maintenance.

Capital Investments Grants

Funding: $750 million

Administrator: Federal Transit Administration

Description: For light rail lines, rapid rail (heavy rail), commuter rail, automated fixed guideway system, or bus-way/high occupancy vehicle facilities.  Priority will be given to projects currently under construction or projects able to obligate funds within 150 days of enactment.

Transit Capital Assistance - Discretionary

Funding: $100 million

Administrator: Federal Transit Administration

Description: Discretionary grants to public transit agencies to improve energy efficiency, and reduce costs and dependence on foreign oil.

National Surface Transportation System

Funding: $1.5 billion

Administrator: Federal Highway Administration

Description: Funds will be used for grants to be awarded to state and local governments or transit agencies on a competitive basis for projects that will have a significant impact on the nation, a metropolitan area, or a region. Eligible projects include highway and bridge, public transportation, passenger and freight rail, and port infrastructure investments.  No state can receive more than 20 percent of available funds.

Captial Assistance for High-Speed Rail and Intercity Passenger Rail Service

Funding: $8 billion

Administrator: Federal Railroad Administration

Description: The Capital Assistance to States—Intercity Passenger Rail Service program provides grants to states to fund necessary capital improvements to improve intercity passenger rail service. Grants to States to provide capital assistance for improving intercity passenger rail service as well as maintaining existing passenger rail corridors.
