THIS DOCUMENT IS AVAILABLE ON THE GES DISC WEB SITE FOR HISTORICAL INFORMATION
PURPOSES ONLY.
Information provided in this document may not be accurate. We recommend
checking other sources related to these data or sensors to acquire reliable and
updated information.
Explanation: The Dataset or Sensor Guide Document you are accessing is no longer actively
maintained. The Dataset Guide Documents were created for earlier versions of
the NASA EOSDIS system. The content of these documents, particularly with
regard to characteristics of the data or technical descriptions of a sensor, is
likely still accurate. However, information such as contact names, phone
numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses, software programs, system
requirements, and data access procedures may no longer be accurate. We
therefore recommend searching for updated information from other sites to
insure that reliable and current information is obtained.
Summary
Version 6 data from the Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS) instrument, mounted on the Nimbus-7 satellite, are available from the GES DISC DAAC. LIMS measured thermal IR emissions from the Earth limb at 6 bands (6.2, 6.3, 9.6, 11.3 and two at 15 µm). The instrument operated successfully for about 9 months from October 25, 1978 to May 28, 1979. The current principal investigator for LIMS is Dr. Ellis E. Remsberg.
Data are processed to level 2 and consist of daily, geolocated vertical profiles of temperature, geopotential height, and mixing ratios of ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), water vapor (H2O), and nitric acid (HNO3). Vertical resolution of the data is approximately 0.88 km (109 pressure levels from 1000 to 0.001 hPa), and the horizontal resolution is about 190 km along the orbit track (1.6 degrees latitude near the equator). There are about 260 profiles per orbit (one profile every 24 seconds). The LIMS version 6 level 2 profile data are written as ASCII formatted files and contain a full days worth of measurements for all parameters.

For more information please see the LIMS web site.
NOTE: This version 6 LIMS level 2 profile data product supercedes the data product known as LAIPAT (version 5 LIMS inverted profile achival tape). There are currently no version 6 products that replace the old LAMAT (version 5 LIMS map archival tape) and LASMAT (version 5 LIMS stacked map archival tape) products.
