Find a Variety of Educational Resources that will Help You Teach About Estuaries

Curriculum by State and Topic. Grade Levels 6-12
Find specific NERRS educational materials and curricula organized by state and topic. These materials are generally intended to compliment a visit to a Reserve site, but are also appropriate for students studying estuaries anywhere in a specific State and/or about a discrete topic.

Tutorials. Grade Levels 6-12
  • Using Google Earth to Explore Estuaries - Grade Level: 9-12
Google Earth is a virtual globe web site that lets people fly around Earth, zooming in for details or zooming out for a broad perspective. Google Earth uses satellite imagery, aerial photography and a 3D globe, putting the world’s geographic information at your fingertips. Google Earth is a powerful tool for exploring your world. In your study of estuaries, it can be used to reveal the relationships among landforms, water features, towns, cities, and the habitats of the animals and plants that live in estuaries.
  • Monitoring Tutorial - Grade Level:  6-12 and above
A series of animations and visualizations will make it fun and easier for you to understand why scientists monitor estuaries and what parameters they use to measure water quality and weather patterns in an estuary.
  • Estuaries Tutorial - Grade Level: 9-12
This is an overview of estuarine habitats, the threats facing them, and efforts to monitor and protect estuaries nationwide. It includes photographs, videos, illustrations and interactive graphics to enhance the text and bring understanding to concepts that may be difficult to visualize.

Data Lessons. Grade Levels 6-12
Find a series of modules and activities to help you bring real-time and archived data into your K-12 classrooms.

Lessons/Activities. Grade Levels K-12

  • Estuaries Professional Development - Grades 5-12
These resources focus on the different types of estuaries, the kinds of organisms found in estuaries, and how they have adapted to survive in these unique environments. These materials also highlight the important work being done to monitor, protect and restore estuaries. Lesson plans are provided, along with case studies from teachers describing how the lessons were implemented in their classrooms. Many of the resources provided here were created in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association.
  • EstuaryLive Activities - Grades K-12
Several of the lesson plans and activities listed here complemented EstuaryLive broadcasts from past years. Because of their usefulness, outside of the EstuaryLive program, we are now evaluating and revising them. Why? We want to enhance their quality and provide educators with better packaged materials that will lead your students to deep understanding of estuaries. In the mean time, please contact us if you wish to get a copy of any of original lesson plans. To access this list of resources, click here.

Quiz/Games - Grade Levels 6-12

  • Quiz: How much do you really know about estuaries? Take the challenge and find out what you know. Click the link to begin. Good luck! View Non-Flash Version of the Questions. Contact us for a copy of the answer sheet.
  • Game: Are you willing to take the challenge? We trust you will and will want to take on this amazing adventure. Come back at the end of the year to play the game and demonstrate how much you truly know about estuaries!

Multimedia Resources
Access this library of power point presentations, posters, pictures and video for educational use! We have developed this multimedia section to enhance and support learning about estuaries.

Virtual Field Trips
When a real field trip is not possible, you can access a series of links and find several virtual field trips to specific estuaries. You can also learn how to use a series of short video clips we have posted on this site and work with your students to generate their own learning experiences.
