We will soon provide you with a user-friendly interface that will allow you to query the NERRS System-Wide Monitoring data, as well as other datasets. This interface is currently being designed with students and educators in mind. We expect to launch this interface by the end of the year. Subscribe to receive the NERRS Education Bulletin, if you would like us to notify you when it becomes available.

The new SWMP Education Interface will support the data related activities of the Estuaries 101 Curriculum.

For now we invite you to check out the following resources:
  • Archived and near-real time NERRS System-wide Water Quality and Weather Data may be accessed directly via interactive map at the Centralized Data Management Office: http://cdmo.baruch.sc.edu/QueryPages/googlemap.cfm Select a Reserve site, then you can choose to explore weather, water quality or nutrient data from a specific station.
  • Data in the Classroom is an online resource for K-12 teachers interested in using real scientific data in their teaching. This Web site is the current home of the NOAA Ocean Data Education (NODE) Project, which is developing curriculum for grades 5-8 designed to help teachers and students use real scientific data to explore dynamic Earth processes and understand the impact of environmental events on a regional or global scale. The challenge posed by this project is to determine what teachers need to help them develop competency in the use of online tools to access real-time data so that they will be able to integrate them into their instructional practices. The project proposes that the best way to tackle this challenge is to present the use of real-time data as part of a systems approach to learning. Three modules have been developed using this approach: El Niño, Sea Level and Water Quality. The Water Quality Module makes use of a special online tool which provides the interface to the NERRS/SWMP data offered through the CDMO.
  • Chesapeake Bay Interpretative Buoy System (CBIBS) - CBIBS is a combination of on-the-water sensor platforms providing real-time data streams and educational tools to interpret portions of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. These tools will provide users with the products and information they need to enhance their understanding of the Chesapeake Bay environment. CBIBS will provide both real-time data and related curriculum to educators for use in the classroom and in the field. NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office (NCBO), in partnership with the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS), has creating "Estuaries 101", a curriculum that will include a specific Chesapeake Bay module. "Estuaries 101" includes professional development and training. Additional curricula, developed with CBIBS partners, will highlight historical, cultural and local stories related to the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.
  • Using Ocean Observing Systems in K-12 Education - A comprehensive study on the current state of real-time environmental data use in classrooms around the country.
  • Real-Time Ocean Data Sites - A collection of web sites that feature real-time ocean data.
