Ocean observing systems provide a focus around which the efforts of various federally-funded ocean education networks can be coordinated. This paper explores the connections that exist and highlights opportunities for collaboration. The education networks addressed include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Estuarine Research Reserve System, the National Marine Sanctuaries Program, Sea Grant Educators Network and the National Science Foundation's Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence. |

This front-end evaluation was designed to investigate the ways by which kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers and students can use real-time data and associated education products to understand and appreciate the role that the environment, in particular the ocean, plays in their lives. This needs assessment provided useful information on the real time data teachers would actually use and provided a list of “essential” elements that need to be part of an ideal educational product and web-interface that uses data. |
