How Learning about Estuaries meets State and National Science Education Standards       D. Barstow, J. K. L. Hammerman, A. Ibanez   This study analyzes how estuaries meet state and national standards and reports on how estuaries  activities can help students learn some of the “big ideas” in science and develop essential science research and thinking skills.
2008
The State of Estuarine Education: K–12 Needs Assessment   J. K. L. Hammerman, A. Ibanez, D. Barstow   This assessment, produced by TERC, determined obstacles to teaching about estuaries, and teacher’s preferences for accessing and utilizing various educational products. Results of this assessment were used to help shape the development of teaching and professional development materials about estuaries.
2007
Ocean Observatories and the Role of Federal Ocean Education Networks   L. Rom, G. Muller-Parker, A. Ibanez, M. Kaplan, V. Clark   Ocean observing systems provide a focus around which the efforts of various federally-funded ocean education networks can be coordinated. This paper explores the connections that exist and highlights opportunities for collaboration. The education networks addressed include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Estuarine Research Reserve System, the National Marine Sanctuaries Program, Sea Grant Educators Network and the National Science Foundation's Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence.
2006
Achieving Environmental Literacy with NOAA’s Observing Systems Data   C. McDougall, A. Ibanez, S. White   This paper discusses NOAA's existing observing system education activities and reports on some of the pilot projects NOAA has begun with a focus on a case study provided by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS), a program that provides a fully operational network of integrated observing systems focused on the nation’s estuaries.
2005
SWMP/IOOS Real-Time Data in K-12 Classrooms: A Front-end Evaluation    Chris Parsons   This front-end evaluation was designed to investigate the ways by which kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers and students can use real-time data and associated education products to understand and appreciate the role that the environment, in particular the ocean, plays in their lives. This needs assessment provided useful information on the real time data teachers would actually use and provided a list of “essential” elements that need to be part of an ideal educational product and web-interface that uses data.
2006
EstuaryLive: Linking Classrooms to the Natural World   A. Ibanez, A. Corridore, B. Lovin, D. Coker, E. Simms, G. Alexander, L. Yokel, M. Sedlecky, N. Laurson, R. Weidman, T. Gaskill   EstuaryLive is a live, interactive, field-based experience that brings estuaries to the audience through the Internet. This paper reviews the EstuaryLive process, its
conceptualization, technology utilized, case examples,
results, and opportunities for participation. It also discusses the impact of the program as an educational tool, role it can play within the current educational environment on the use of technologies, and the need to increase ocean and coastal literacy.

2005
Inventory and Assessment of K-12 and Professional Teacher Development Programs in NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve System   Pandion Systems, Inc.   This report is constitutes a K-12 and professional teacher development inventory and assessment of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) education programs. The report provides baseline data, synthesis, and recommendations for program improvements in support of the NERRS Strategic Plan.
