Washington, Jul 11, 2007 -  Yesterday, U.S. Representative Scott Garrett (NJ-5) introduced a bill to protect land that is currently being threatened by development near the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge in Sussex County, New Jersey.

In introducing this legislation, Rep. Garrett stated, “New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation. I believe that our open spaces and wildlife refuges are valuable resources and I will continue to fight for their protection to ensure they can be enjoyed by generations to come.”

Rep. Scott Garrett has made protecting open space one of his top environmental priorities since arriving in Congress in 2003. He is a key supporter of federal efforts to protect the Highlands region in North Jersey, most recently offering an amendment to fund the Highlands Conservation Act. And, his legislation to name the Musconetcong River in Warren County a part of the wild and scenic rivers program was signed into law in December 2006. Garrett is also an active member of the Congressional Wildlife Refuge Caucus.
