WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Benjamin L. Cardin (both D-Md.) today announced the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Frostburg State University Foundation for the Evergreen Heritage Center Consortium Feasibility Study. The grant will be used to determine the feasibility of creating a consortium to establish the Evergreen Heritage Center as a heritage showcase, offering cultural and educational programs to area students and residents.

“The Evergreen Heritage Center is a portal into Western Maryland’s rich culture and history,” said Senator Mikulski. “I strongly support projects like this one that will connect more Marylanders to the rich heritage of the state. I will continue to fight in the U.S. Senate to keep Western Maryland a priority in the federal checkbook.”

“The Evergreen Heritage Center is an important historical resource and this grant will help ensure it is preserved for future generations,” said Senator Cardin. “I strongly support providing opportunities for Marylanders and all Americans learn more about Western Maryland’s unique history and culture.”

The Evergreen Heritage Center features a 200-year old home that has been recognized as a Maryland Historic Property since 1976. The 130-acre property, which is adjacent to the Great Allegheny Passage and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, includes a walking trail with 22 points of interest, such as the Big Vein coal mine sites and the remains of an old mule stable and blacksmith forge.
