The System

NOAA’s National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) - a network of 27 estuarine reserves across the U.S. -has been set aside by the American people for long-term research, education and stewardship. It protects more than one million acres of protected areas, covering estuarine land and water. These sites provide essential habitat for wildlife; offer educational opportunities for students, teachers and the public; and serve as living laboratories for scientists.
