Lamborn Welcomes USO to Fort Carson

Congressman Lamborn recognizes importance of USO to military families

Washington, Sep 26, 2008 -

Congressman Lamborn issued the following release to welcome the new United Service Organization (USO) to Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado:

“The USO has historically served our men and women in the armed forces since the early 1940s and I am delighted to welcome this esteemed organization to the Fifth Congressional District of Colorado.

“We are forever indebted to the brave men and women who serve tirelessly overseas and here in the United States to preserve our freedom. The new USO location will build morale for thousands of Fort Carson families. It will also provide a ‘home away from home’ feel to those who are stationed here and to their families, as well as show the deep appreciation we have for their sacrifices.

“The USO boasts a rich and patriotic history and I am confident that both the military and the Fifth Congressional District will benefit greatly from this wonderful organization.” –Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05)

Set to open on September 26, 2008 with a ribbon cutting ceremony, the new USO center will provide servicemen and women with a range of programs and services—USO Care Package Program, New Spouse Orientation, libraries and reading rooms, WiFi Internet Café, and hosting a variety of social events, to name a few.

With nearly 30,000 soldiers and 44,000 families anticipated to be assigned to Fort Carson by 2013, the new USO will help thousands of families transition into the Colorado Springs community and military life.  Currently there are 18,000 troops and 27,000 family members stationed at Fort Carson.

The USO was formed 1941 as a combination of six civilian agencies, the Salvation Army, Young Mens’ Christian Association, Young Women’s Christian Association, National Catholic Community Services, National Travelers Aid Association, and the National Jewish Welfare Board.  Currently existing as a private, nonprofit organization, the USO is continually expanding to serve our armed servicemen and women by focusing on morale, welfare, and recreational-type services.
