Mary Rasenberger Named Director of Program Management for National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program
Mary E. Rasenberger, who has served as the policy planning adviser for special programs in the U.S. Copyright Office, has been named director of Program Management for the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP).
"Mary brings an extraordinary range of knowledge, expertise and leadership experience to this position," said Laura E. Campbell, associate librarian for Strategic Initiatives, who appointed Rasenberger. "For the past several years, Mary has advised NDIIPP on copyright issues associated with digital preservation as well as overseen the important work of our digital preservation partners nationwide." Campbell, who is also the Library’s chief information officer, is head of the service unit that is responsible for the digital preservation program.
In her new role, Rasenberger will direct and manage the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (www.digitalpreservation.gov), established by Congress in 2000 as a collaborative initiative of the Library of Congress. Rasenberger also helped establish an independent body, the Section 108 Study Group, which is a select committee of copyright experts convened by the Library of Congress and charged with updating for the digital world the Copyright Act’s balance between the rights of creators and copyright owners and the needs of libraries and archives.
As director of NDIIPP program management, Rasenberger will also be responsible for providing leadership to the broader external communities of partners collaborating with the Library to build a national collection of digital content for the nation. In addition, she will provide authoritative guidance on the resolution of complex problems facing NDIIPP with an emphasis on intellectual property issues.
Rasenberger joined the Library in 2002 as a policy planning adviser for policy and international affairs in the U.S. Copyright Office, which is a part of the Library of Congress. In that position, she provided expert assistance to Congress and executive agencies on copyright issues and assisted in the negotiation of the intellectual property provisions of international trade agreements. Previously, she was in private legal practice in New York. Rasenberger has a B.A. from Barnard College, an M.A. from Boston College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
