Garrett Hosts Paying for College Workshops
Washington,
Mar 17, 2006 -
Congressman Scott Garrett has invited representatives from the New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) and Sallie Mae, the nation’s largest provider of federal and private student loans, to come to North Jersey to meet with parents and students to discuss ways to make a college education financially possible.
"As a Congressman, I have worked hard to make college education a reality for more low- and middle-income students, by supporting legislation to improve student loan programs and encourage education paths for nursing, teaching, and other in-demand careers," stated Garrett.
This Congress has passed into law the following:
Reduced total loan fees from up to 4 percent to just 1 percent to ensure that students get to use more of what they borrow.
Expanded access to PLUS loans, which allow borrowing up to the cost of attendance, giving students more help in financing graduate study.
Passed student loan reforms that refocus billions of dollars from an inefficient Federal student loan program to benefits for students in need of aid.
Expanded loan forgiveness for students who follow career-paths in areas such as high-quality science, math, special education teaching, nursing, and first-response in disadvantaged areas.
Opened up loan deferment for active duty servicemembers and activated National guardsmen—meaning that payments are not required and interest does not accrue—for the purpose of strengthening higher education opportunities for military personnel.
"Our young people are a tremendous asset to this country and I will continue to do all I can to ensure that they are able to pay for the education to excel in a competitive world economy," Garrett continued. "Congress is taking steps to make more options available and it is important that families are fully informed of these options."
These meetings will take place at the times and places listed below. Media are invited.
