USADF Signs Grant to Support Youth In Ghana :

WASHINGTON - July 15, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – July 15, 2009 – The United States African Development Foundation (USADF) has signed a grant to benefit a community group in Ghana.  The grant will benefit Forward Ever Youth Cooperative Farming Marketing Society Ltd (Forward Ever).

After signing the grant, USADF President Lloyd Pierson stated, “USADF seeks to work with some of the most marginalized populations in Africa.  This grant will work with the youth in Ghana to increase their incomes and create more jobs.”

Located in Keta Municipality, Volta Region, Forward Ever aims to create jobs for the youth in the community.  Its primary activities are producing and marketing fresh vegetables such as chilies, okra, shallots, onions, and eggplant, among others.  By expanding their production, Forward Ever will be able to create more jobs for the youth of Keta.   The community group currently had 58 members.

The eighteen month grant will enable Forward Ever to strengthen internal and marketing capabilities and improve working capital.  Specifically, the grant will fund the purchase of organic manure, development of a business plan, obtaining organic certification, train 58 farmers in organic farming, and acquire office equipment.

USADF established programming in Ghana in 1984.  Ghana’s current portfolio stands at twenty-three investment projects totaling nearly $4.7 million dollars.  For more information about the portfolio, please visit the country’s quick source page at http://www.adf.gov/USADF-QuickSourceCountryPortfolioPage-Ghana.htm .
