Advanced Education Nursing

Funds enhancements to programs that train nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse-midwives, nurse anesthetists, nurse educators, nurse administrators, public health nurses, or other nurse specialists that require master’s or doctoral degrees, combined RN/master’s degrees, post-master’s certificates, or certificate nurse-midwifery programs, in existence on November 12, 1998.

Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship

Funds advanced nursing education programs to provide traineeships that pay tuition, books, fees, and a living stipend for registered nurses enrolled in programs that prepare nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse- midwives, nurse anesthetists, nurse administrators, nurse educators, public health nurses, and nurses in other specialties requiring advanced education.

Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship

Funds nurse anesthetist training programs to provide traineeships that pay tuition, books, fees, and a living stipend for registered nurses who have completed at least 12 months in a master’s or doctoral nurse anesthesia program.

Nurse Education, Practice and Retention

Funds projects that address the nursing shortage in the following ways:

Nurse education projects that focus on expanding enrollment in baccalaureate programs, developing internship and residency programs, or providing education in new technologies, including distance learning.

Nurse practice projects that focus on establishing/expanding practice arrangements in non-institutional settings, providing care for underserved populations and other high-risk groups, skill-building in managed care, quality improvement and other skills needed in existing and emerging organized health care systems, or developing cultural competencies.

Nurse retention projects that focus on building career ladder bridge programs that promote career advancement or enhancing patient care delivery systems through improving the retention of registered nurses.

Nursing Workforce Diversity

Funds projects that increase nursing education opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds (including racial and ethnic minorities underrepresented among registered nurses) through student scholarships or stipends, pre-entry preparation, and retention activities. Preference is given to projects that benefit rural or underserved populations or help to meet the public health nursing needs.

HHS Announces $13.4 Million in Financial Assistance to Support Nurses

Comprehensive Geriatric Education

Funds support programs that train nurses in geriatrics, including curriculum development, faculty training and continuing education. Does not fund trainees.

Nurse Faculty Loan

Funds schools of nursing to establish and operate a loan fund to help registered nurses complete their education to become nursing faculty. Loan recipients may cancel 85 percent of the loan over four years in return for serving full time as faculty in any accredited school of nursing.
