EPA's Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Grant Program Excels, According to National Academy of Sciences Report
WASHINGTON (NCER) - The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) recently released a press release 
and a report entitled "The Measure of STAR" in which they evaluated Science to Achieve Results (STAR), a research grant and fellowship program in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. NAS reports that the STAR program fills a unique niche by supporting "important research that is not conducted or funded by other agencies" and is "directly relevant" to the mission of EPA. In addition, NAS states that STAR research results have already improved the scientific foundation for decision making even though the program is young and many of the projects have not yet been completed.

Protecting Children’s Health
WASHINGTON (NCER) - Since 1998, EPA in partnership with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has funded eight university-based research centers exclusively focused on children’s health. The centers study the causes and mechanisms of children’s disorders having an environmental cause, e.g., asthma, other respiratory distress illness, and developmental delays due to pesticide exposure. WASHINGTON (NCER) - EPA-sponsored research is showing that the elderly may be more susceptible to a form of pollution known as airborne particulate matter, or PM. Overview of the HSRC Program: Incubator for Remediation Research
WASHINGTON (NCER) - The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the Hazardous Substance Research Center program (HSRC) to assist in the implementation of Superfund and to address major hazardous substance environmental problems at a regional level. Areas of focus include urban environments, contaminated sediments, natural remediation and restoration technologies, abandoned mine lands, and chlorinated solvents in groundwater.

STAR Researchers Study Environmental Behavior of Mercury
WASHINGTON (NCER) - Due to the growing concern of Mercury contamination in the environment, EPA's research office launched an initiative in 2000 to set targets and priorities for the Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program and other research efforts to understand this pollutant. In response to this charge, STAR research is currently focused on the natural and human sources of mercury, the behavior of mercury in the atmosphere, the impact of mercury in the U.S. as it travels from industrial sources in Asia, and other questions.
