Monroe County Schools Receive $500,000 Grant

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar announced today that the Monroe County Community School Corporation has been selected to receive the Teaching American History Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This grant will be in the amount of $497,917 for the period July 15, 2009 through July 14, 2012. It is anticipated that the grant will be for a total of three years, but is subject to annual appropriations.

The Monroe County Community School Corporation’s project is entitled “History Educators Project: Teaching American History through the Lens of Indiana.” The goals of the project are to deepen teachers’ knowledge, understanding and appreciation of traditional American history; to improve teachers’ delivery of history content as a separate, academic subject; and to raise student achievement in history.

The Teaching American History Grants Program is designed to raise student achievement by improving teacher’s knowledge and understanding of traditional U.S. history. By helping teachers to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of U.S. history as a separate subject matter within the core curriculum, these programs will improve instruction and raise student achievement.

Questions regarding the Federal Grants process may be directed to Andrew Mills, Grants Coordinator, by phone at 202-224-4814 or by email at grants@lugar.senate.gov.
