Dear Friends:

June was an active month that started with an exciting lunch in the Senate Dining Room with the winners of the annual Lugar/Farm Bureau Essay Contest: Brandon Wells of Evansville and Lynnette Whitsitt of Huntingburg.

Indiana Farm Bureau and I started this contest in 1985 to increase the awareness of young Hoosiers of the significance of Indiana agriculture and how it relates to the food supply, nutrition and energy development. Students all across the state wrote essays on this year's theme, "working our way to energy independence."

The essays of one male and one female student from each respective county and district level were then selected as winners by Indiana Farm Bureau. From the distinguished pool of district winners, Brandon and Lynnette’s essays were chosen as the state overall winners. It was wonderful to visit with these remarkable students and their respective families when they traveled to Washington in celebration of their accomplishments, and I look forward, eagerly, to next year’s contest and fellowship with its winners.

As always, I thank you for reading the Lugar Letter and wish you continuing success.

Sincerely,

Dick Lugar
