A Moment for the History Books

In my first opportunity to confirm a judge to our nation's highest court, I was honored to support as distinguished an individual as Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

We have all had the opportunity to hear Justice Sotomayor's story over the past few months, and I had the opportunity to meet with her in June. Throughout this process, I have only become more and more impressed by her intellect, character and commitment to justice. She has a wealth of both personal and professional experience, and I have no doubt that she will serve our country well.

It has been an honor to participate in such a historic moment. As the first Hispanic and just the third woman to serve on the Supreme Court, Justice Sotomayor is a role model for countless young Americans. Her confirmation is a celebration of the diversity of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives that our country enjoys.

GI Bill Resource and Application Guide

ENCOURAGES VETERANS AND FAMILY MEMBERS TO APPLY FOR EDUCATION BENEFITS


In a series of local town hall meetings, U.S. Senator Tom Udall unveiled a new GI Bill Resource and Application Guide to encourage Post-9/11 veterans and their family members to apply for benefits. The Department of Veterans Affairs will begin distributing these benefits to post-9/11 veterans and family members who qualify on Aug. 1.  Udall, whose father and uncle both benefited from the original Montgomery GI Bill, fought to enact the new education benefits.

Anyone who served for at least 90 days after September 10, 2001 or was discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days is eligible for benefits under the new law. The legislation provides a full four year college education to those who served at least three years after September 10, 2001. Those serving less than three years are eligible for a percentage of the maximum benefits based on a sliding scale of time served. In addition, stipends are available for housing and books.
