Homeland Security
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was created in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America. President George W. Bush decided 22 previously disparate domestic agencies needed to be coordinated into one department to better protect America against threats to our homeland.
DHS’ mission is to lead the unified national effort to secure America. DHS responsibilities are to prevent and deter terrorist attacks and protect against and respond to threats and hazards to our nation. They also include ensuring safe and secure borders, welcoming lawful immigrants and visitors and promoting the free flow of commerce.
The DHS website contains information related to training, equipment, planning, exercises and other critical homeland security needs. The site also contains information about federal grant programs for enhancing the preparedness of firefighters, police, and emergency medical personnel as well as updates on standards for state and local preparedness activities and equipment.
Ready.gov provides information regarding family preparedness in case of an emergency.
