"I am pleased to be able to announce this new federal grant for another eastern Connecticut fire department.  The work our firefighters and emergency responders perform is incredibly important to the safety of our communities and I will continue to support them in any way that I can," stated Courtney. "I applaud the Bungay Fire Brigade for its proactive approach to meeting its needs."

"I applaud the Bungay Fire Brigade for its proactive approach to meeting its needs."

The Bungay Fire Brigade will be using the $38,000 grant to purchase and install a new cascade compressor air filling station.  The new compressor will be used to fill Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) tanks, which are critical to the safety of our firefighters.

Bungay Fire Brigade member Melissa Webster stated, "We are very pleased and grateful to receive the AFG grant. Without this assistance, this much needed equipment upgrade would not have been possible."

The purpose of the AFG is to award grants directly to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations. These awards aim to enhance first responders’ ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first responder personnel, with respect to fire-related hazards. Using a competitive process overseen by fire service subject matter experts, AFG grants are awarded to applicants whose requests best address the priorities of the AFG program.

Congressman Courtney remains committed to supporting such programs as the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, which provides much needed funding for first responders. The Congressman has hosted numerous grant seminars to education area depart attended by dozens of area departments. These forums provide local departments with the assistance they need to secure funding.

For more information on the program and for assistance with grant applications, local first responders may contact Congressman Joe Courtney’s Norwich District Office at (860) 886-0139.
