Harkin, Culver Hosted Economic Recovery Community Meeting

Senator Tom Harkin, Governor Chet Culver and officials from the Iowa Department of Management hosted a community meeting on Monday, April 27th at the Dallas Center-Grimes Community High School in Grimes. The purpose of the conference was to offer participants information on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the Economic Recovery Package, in the following areas:

  • Infrastructure improvements
  • Housing improvements
  • Federal and state grant opportunities
  • Energy improvements
  • Aid to small business and workforce development

Participants received information from panelists of various state and federal government agencies about grant opportunities through the Economic Recovery Package and regular fiscal year program funding.

Participating agencies were: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Small Business Administration, Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Economic Development Administration, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Department of Economic Development, Iowa Financing Authority, Iowa Office of Energy Independence, Iowa Department of Human Rights and Iowa Workforce Development.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act assists communities in extending a helping hand to individuals and families displaced by foreclosures or other economic hardships and provides more than $10 billion nationwide to help expand the availability of quality affordable housing and to support communities hard hit by foreclosures.
