Colorado Veterans' Cemetery Makes Headway

Rep. Lamborn (Colorado Springs) announced today that efforts to establish a new national cemetery in Colorado have taken a substantial step forward. Since January, Rep. Lamborn has been working closely with Rep. Salazar (Pueblo), Sen. Allard, and Sen. Salazar, as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), to bring about the creation of a national cemetery in Colorado.

While the idea of establishing a veterans’ cemetery in Colorado has been explored for several years, its proponents have been frustrated by the lack of advancement. Over the course of the past eight months however, promising developments have occurred. The VA is now exploring the possibility of buying land for a new national cemetery in Colorado and is attempting to identify how such a purchase might be authorized and funded.

“The rest of the Colorado Delegation, VA, and I are all acutely aware of the need for this cemetery, and are committed to seeing that this need is met,” said Rep. Lamborn. “We are pleased with the continued progress on this issue.”

Recent statistics have shown that Fort Logan in Denver will be reaching full capacity sooner than initially projected. In 2006 Fort Logan had the seventh largest workload of all veterans’ cemeteries in the country with 3,491 burials, a 4.1% increase from 2005.
