Lamborn Announces Resolution Supporting the Ideals and Values of the Olympic Movement

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Doug Lamborn (Colorado Springs) introduced a resolution supporting the ideals and values of the Olympic Movement. For over 100 years, the Olympics have built a better and more peaceful world by using athletics to educate young people and to bring people from numerous countries together in friendly competition.

“The Olympic Games provide countries throughout the world the unique opportunity to come together in peace, celebrate their cultures, and be reminded of their commonalities,” said Rep. Lamborn. “The Olympic Movement emphasizes the values and ideals of, among other things, an active, healthy lifestyle for both able-bodied and disabled athletes, personal excellence, good sportsmanship, and fair play, without regard for gender, race, or age.”

On June 23, 2007, the day when the Congress of Paris approved Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s proposal to found the Modern Olympic Games, the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) will be celebrating the centennial anniversary of the founding of the Modern Olympic Movement.

“It is necessary to honor the men and women throughout the United States who have represented our great nation in past games, and the thousands who are currently training to participate in the upcoming Summer Olympics in Beijing and Winter Olympics in Vancouver,” added Rep. Lamborn. “These great athletes inspire all of us to strive for greatness, and they deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.”
