FR 2005

Automobile Finance Terms

Description: This report collects information on new- and used-car interest rates, maturities, loan amounts, and aggregate number and amount of loans. The actual reports are photocopies of internal company management reports.

OMB: None.

Purpose: The data are used for internal analysis of the cyclically sensitive auto industry. Auto makers sometimes attemp to boost sales by running interest rate concession campaigns. The monthly data collected by this report gives a timely reading about the effects of such campaigns on average lending terms.

Background: The Federal Reserve has been the primary producer of aggregate statistics on consumer credit since 1942. This role stems from the Federal Reserve's responsibility for monetary policy, its particular responsibilities and data requirements for regulating consumer credit on occasion, and its well-developed channels of communication with major creditor groups. Since the 1940s, the Federal Reserve has maintained a program for the direct collection of consumer credit data from commercial banks, finance companies, and gasoline marketers.

Respondent Panel: The panel consists of three domestic auto manufacturers, the same panel as the monthly report on Passenger Auto Contract Collection Trends (FR 2012).

Frequency: Monthly, activity during the month.

Public Release: Aggregate data are published in the monthly Consumer Credit (G.19) statistical release (http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/), with permission from all of the respondents.
