Detailed Forecast Discussion |
Current Conditions: As of this afternoon the region is experiencing cloudy conditions and temperatures in the lower 70. Todays cloud cover is being generated by the low to our southeast over the Delmarva Peninsula. Ozone is in the good range today in response to the abundant cloud cover. However, the cloud cover is having the opposite effect on PM 2.5 by stabilizing the atmosphere. This has allowed concentrations to reach into the moderate range for most of the day. ***Thursday's Forecast:On Thursday the forecast area will see another mostly cloudy day with a high near 80. There will also be some residual moisture so an isolated shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. These conditions will limit ozone production again and keep concentrations in the good range. PM 2.5 will be in the lower moderate range due to continued high humidity and mostly calm winds, but if the winds pick up there is the possibility that the particulate will mix out of the atmosphere and concentrations will fall into the good range. *** Extended Outlook: On Friday a weak area of high pressure will begin to build into the region. This will mean partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the lower 80s. The sunlight reaching the ground will enable ozone production, but concentrations will not make it out of the good range. PM 2.5 concentrations will begin to increase and will be solidly in the moderate range due to increased humidity as well as transport in from other regions. For the rest of the weekend the high pressure will dominate the area. This will increase the transport of pollutants into the region and this will give ozone concentrations a chance to reach the moderate range. Particulate will be in the moderate range during this time, but the possibility exists that concentrations could reach the USG range. --Glotfelty |
