August 2009: The Healing Powers of Public Gardens

Gardens are good for your health, right? In order to prove this scientifically, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Fla., collaborated with the Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University to create a program targeting a growing demographic: seniors over age 65 who are dealing with depression. A three-year study showed that walking in the gardens significantly reduced depression symptoms and led the museum to create a biannual program of guided-imagery walks. Read more.

WebWise 2009: Digital Debates

The 10th annual WebWise Conference on Libraries and Museums in the Digital Age was held in Washington, DC, February 25-27, 2009. IMLS partnered with The Wolfsonian-Florida International University and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to host this year’s signature event. The theme of the 2009 conference was “Digital Debates.” Sessions featured library and museum leaders as well as experts outside of the cultural heritage community who stimulated conversation and reflected on the challenges posed by emerging technologies and their effects on the roles that libraries and museums will play in the next decade. The conference opened with a half-day pre-conference workshop on the afternoon of February 25, followed by the opening reception. The main conference began on February 26 and concluded at noon on February 27. The conference was held at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill.
