Sen. Cornyn met with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano in his Washington office to discuss comprehensive immigration reform. The meeting gave Sen. Cornyn the opportunity to express what he would like to see in immigration reform legislation.

Friday, July 17, 2009: Clean Water Restoration Act Roundtable

In San Angelo, Sen. Cornyn met with area farmers, ranchers, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Pro-Tem Jon Mark Hogg, Tom Green County Judge Mike Brown, and senior representatives from various associations across the state to discuss their shared opposition to the Clean Water Restoration Act. This legislation, which recently passed the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and awaits consideration by the full Senate, would overturn two Supreme Court rulings to greatly extend federal government oversight to all bodies of water—imposing new costs and bureaucratic burdens directly on Texas landowners. Even the “playa lakes” typical to West Texas, which can appear and disappear in a matter of hours, would be placed under federal control if the Clean Water Restoration Act is allowed to pass.

Sen. Cornyn met with members of the New Haven Fire Department in his Washington office.  The New Haven Firefighters were in DC to testify at the Supreme Court Confirmation Hearing for Judge Sotomayor.

Thursday, July 09, 2009: Meeting With Mayor of Alice

Sen. Cornyn met in his Washington office with Alice Mayor Rito Silva, where Mayor Silva presented Sen. Cornyn with an honorary plaque and key to the city of Alice.  Sen. Cornyn has been working with Mayor Silva as the city seeks to secure federal funds for the following projects, which will improve outdated infrastructure and boost safety standards for Alice residents:   ·         Sewer Main Replacement, Texas Boulevard ·         Trunk Main Replacement, Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant

Wednesday, July 08, 2009: Meeting With San Antonio Mayor Castro

Sen. Cornyn hosted a meeting with San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro in Washington.  They discussed their mutual support for projects that will help San Antonio continue to grow and prosper, like the San Antonio River Channel project, which would make important upgrades to advance flood protection efforts and improve the acquatic ecosystems.  They also talked about the role that San Antonio is playing to provide clean energy for the city’s growing electrical needs.  CPS Energy, the largest municipally owned energy company, ranks number one in wind capacity, and is pursuing solar and nuclear expansion projects.  All of these energy sources are needed to provide diversified and long-term energy security solutions.

At the State Capitol in Austin, Sen. Cornyn presented a Purple Heart to SSG William D. Warren of Copperas Cove, TX. Sen. Cornyn was honored to present this medal and thank SSG Warren for his bravery and dedication to our country.

On the 4th of July, Sen. Cornyn participated in the 40th Anniversary Aqua Boom Independence Day Parade in Kingsland, TX. Sen. Cornyn served as an Honorary Grand Marshall of the parade.

Saturday, July 04, 2009: Independence Day Tea Party

Sen. Cornyn joined many fellow Texans at the Independence Day Tea Party at the State Capitol in Austin. The theme of the rally was “Take Back America”, and Sen. Cornyn spoke about the need to rein in the unprecedented spending spree that Congress has recently embarked on and his support for limited government.

Wednesday, July 01, 2009: Hispanic Leaders Roundtable

In Austin, Sen. Cornyn attended a roundtable hosted by the Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC), where he met with local Hispanic leaders to  discuss health care, education, the economy, immigration, and the current Supreme Court nomination , as well as other important issues.   Meeting participants included State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer, Chairman of the MALC, State Representative Veronica Gonzalez, State Representative Diana Maldonado, State Representative Solomon Ortiz, Jr., State Representative Abel Herrero, and Mayor of Kyle Mike Gonzalez, as well as business community leaders such as Blanca Garcia, Chair of the Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Andy Martinez, President and CEO of the Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, among others.
