Introduction: Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued requirements and standards for the establishment and maintenance of fitness-for-duty programs by the licensed nuclear power industry, and by licensees authorized to possess, use, or transport formula quantities of strategic special nuclear material. These fitness-for-duty programs include specifications for Drug-Free Workplace programs.

NRC specifications require the establishment of a comprehensive Workplace program, including:

  • Written policy and procedures
  • Manager and supervisor training
  • Chemical and alcohol testing
  • Employee Assistance Programs

In addition, all contractors and vendor personnel that perform activities for the NRC licensee must be subject to the licensee's fitness-for-duty program, or their own program, which meets the NRC requirements.
