National and Local Health and Education Projects Included by Moran in LHHS Appropriations Bill

  Polio Eradication, Comprehensive Sex-Ed, Autism Research Funded
 

Washington, D.C., July 24th – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, successfully included the following health and education projects in the FY’10 Labor Health and Human Services Appropriations Bill (H.R. 3293).  The bill passed on a 264-153 vote this afternoon on the House floor. 

“These funding initiatives are an investment in our nation and Northern Virginia’s health and educational infrastructure,” said Moran.  “A community is only as strong as its underserved population. The aim of these projects is to provide opportunity for all to live a happy, productive life, regardless of the challenges they may face.”

National Programs and Projects:

  • $102 million for Polio Eradication, an amount that maybe able to completely eradicate this disease across the globe. 
  • $118 million for school-based comprehensive sex education which includes teen pregnancy prevention. Funding for abstinence-only education was zeroed out in the legislation.
  • $52 million to combat Autism and provide funds for pilot projects at community colleges for students with intellectual disabilities, including autism.
  • $1,905,000 for Fragile X research.
  • $13,250,000 for the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, a program that translates written texts into audio recordings for the blind and reading impaired.
  • $4 million for Lupus research, to create a registry at the CDC to track the disease and determine factors that affect its treatment.
  • $39 million for colorectal screening for Colon cancer research and treatment.
  • $6,807,000 in funding for Johanna’s Law, which promotes the research and educational awareness of gynecologic cancers such as ovarian or uterine cancer.
  • $1,942,000 for the Close Up Foundation of Alexandria, Virginia to provide fellowships for low income kids to participate in the program which provides teachers and students an opportunity to explore the inner workings of Washington, meet with elected officials, policy experts and media, and live and learn with peers from across the country.
  • $24,800,000 for the Reading is Fundamental program of Washington, DC.

Northern Virginia Projects:

  • $200,000 for Marymount University in Arlington to purchase science laboratory equipment.
  • $200,000 to Beth El House in Alexandria to provide transitional housing and social services for homeless single mothers and their children working to become economically independent.
  • $250,000 for Best Buddies Virginia in Falls Church to help expand their mentoring program for students with intellectual disabilities.
  • $500,000 to the Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. in Alexandria for expansion and improvements to their community health center.
  • $250,000 for the Hopkins House in Alexandria for their workforce development program to train early childhood teachers.
  • $500,000 to Signature Theatre in Arlington to assist with their arts education program.
  • $200,000 for the Heritage Language Literacy Clubs in Annandale, a mentoring program for Latino youth.
  • $250,000 for Vanguard, a non-profit in Arlington that provides vocational training as part of their substance abuse program.
  • $50,000 to the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus to assist with their mobile screening program in Northern Virginia.
