ECHO - Education Through Cultural and Historical Organizations ($15,000,000)

The requested funds for this national project will be used to help increase the understanding of cultural diversity.

The purpose of ECHO, which was authorized under the No Child Left Behind Act (P.L. 107-110), is to increase the understanding of cultural diversity and multicultural internship programs and cultural exchanges between Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and children and families of
Massachusetts linked by their whaling industry.
 
Recipients: (1) Peabody Essex Museum; (2) New Bedford Whaling Museum & Oceanarium; (3) Alaska Native Heritage Center; (4) Inupiat Heritage Center/North Slope Bourough; (5) Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians; (6) Imiloa Astronomy Center; and (7) Bishop Museum.

Why this is a good use of taxpayer dollars: ECHO funds assist Native Hawaiians and all children and families in Hawaii in learning about shared culture and traditions, and give Native Hawaiians a role in the interpretation of collections and artifacts, many of which are housed in the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, which administers the ECHO funds.
